Virginia Coalition Urges House Subcommittee & Senate Candidate Kaine To Oppose Micro-Unions

NLRB Decision Creates Division, Discord & Disharmony In Workplaces

Richmond, VA – The Alliance for Virginia Jobs (AVAJ) today released statements urging members of the U.S. House Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee to stop micro-unions, which were authorized by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in its Specialty Healthcare decision, by disallowing funding for the measure in the FY 2013 Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Bill.  The coalition also called on former governor and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine to stand with employers in Virginia by opposing micro-unions.

“Members of the U.S. House are working to stop job-killing micro-unions, which create little bargaining units in one place of work negotiating against one another,” said Andrew Vehorn, spokesperson for the Alliance for Virginia Jobs (AVAJ).  “This burdensome regulation only leads to increased complications, confusion and costs in workplaces in the Old Dominion and must be stopped.  We hope Tim Kaine will take a stand and finally tell voters in the Commonwealth where he falls on this important issue.”

Former governor and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine recently said in The Washington Post, “if you decline to state your position, I’ve got a pretty good idea what your position is … the wrong position for Virginia.”

Kaine has failed to address the issue of micro-unions by declining to respond to the questionnaire issued to his campaign by the Alliance for Virginia Jobs (AVAJ).  Kaine also refused to address whether he supported or opposed micro-unions when the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations voted on an amendment to defund them.

In August 2011, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) decided to upend nearly half a century of labor law allowing the formation of multiple micro-unions within a single company.  This policy allows for numerous small unions with varying interests and agendas to compete under one roof.

The Alliance for Virginia Jobs is an organization committed to protecting jobs in Virginia and standing up for the workers and small businesses in the state that grow the economy and create opportunities.
